The village has had the same name since 1912. The first written source in which the location of the village is stated is Piri Reis's Kitab-ı Bahriye, dated 1521.
Babakale Castle in the village, also known as Hırzü'l-Bahr Castle, is known as the last castle built during the Ottoman period. The castle was built by Kaymak Mustafa Pasha between 1722 and 1729 in order to protect the settlement from the attacks of European pirates.
